Passang Sherpa, a prominent figure in the Sherpa community and throughout Sikkim, hailing from Bojoghari, Gangtok. Revered for his expertise in leading traditional rituals. Passang Sherpa is the first name that comes to mind when it comes to orchestrating marriages within the Sherpa community.
His friendly nature and profound knowledge of Sherpa culture and rituals make him a sought-after figure for guiding and leading numerous weddings in Sikkim, as well as in the enchanting locales of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. His role in ensuring the seamless execution of cultural ceremonies has left an indelible mark within the community.
Beyond his role as a leading figure in matrimonial ceremonies, Passang Sherpa has been an integral part of the cultural landscape. Serving as the Culture Secretary for the Denzong Sherpa Association until 2014, he played a pivotal role in shaping cultural programs at both state and national levels. His artistic talents extend to playing the dramngya (Sherpa guitar), flute and gyaling, showcasing his multifaceted abilities.
Passang Sherpa's dedication and contribution to the preservation and promotion of Sherpa folk culture have not gone unnoticed. Numerous non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have acknowledged his tireless efforts, honoring him for his selfless dedication to safeguarding and promoting Sherpa cultural traditions and rituals.
The State Government of Sikkim also bestowed a significant accolade upon Passang Sherpa, recognizing his outstanding contributions. In the year 2017, he was honored with the State Tribal Achiever's Award during the State Level Tribal Festival held at Namprikdang, Dzongu.
The Denzong Sherpa Association also proudly acknowledged his selfless commitment during the annual Losar Fest "Shebru Night" in 2016 at Rongli, East Sikkim. This recognition is a testament to his invaluable role in upholding and sharing the rich cultural heritage of the Sherpa community.
