At Gangtok, Sikkim
GLOBAL SHERPA DAY 2019 was observed under the slogan “SAVE HIMALAYA, SAVE EARTH” on 8th, 9th and 10th of October at Kabi Lingchom, Gangtok & Bakhim jointly organised by the Global Sherpa Association and Denzong Sherpa Association, Sikkim-India.
Himalaya, the land of snow, is the sixth longest mountain chain in the world with 14 of the highest peaks contained within it. It runs through India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Preservation of Himalaya is important not only for its inhabitants but for the whole world because there is only one Himalaya in this world. The Himalayas are the fresh water towers of South Asia and parts of South East Asia. Water originating from their snow, glaciers and rainfall feed the ten largest river systems in Asia. Together these rivers support the drinking water, irrigation, energy, industries and sanitation needs of over 1.3 billion people living in the mountains as well as downstream while also profoundly shaping the cultures and civilization of South Asia.
But today, this valuable resource is under increasing threat. Along with rapidly increasing population, which is placing greater demands on water resources, climate change is affecting water availability throughout the Himalayas and beyond. Thus, with an objective to raise awareness and call on the global community to take initiative towards preserving the Himalayas, the Sherpa community, an ethnic group native to highest liveable regions of Himalaya was organised Global Sherpa Day 2019 under the slogan “Save Himalaya, Save Earth” in Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim. The three day event features the cultural and traditional ethos of the Sherpa community with diverse talks and discussions on the upliftment of Sherpas in various aspects of life, beside our commitment to “Save Himalaya Save Earth”.
